U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes has not been selected to be the next secretary of Homeland Security. Politico reports that Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano has been selected to head the agency. Although Reyes was not considered a marquee contender, his name had emerged in some news reports. The El Paso Democrat heads the House Intelligence committee.
Reyes spokesman Vince Perez told PolitickerTX.com Reyes had not been approached by anyone connected to the incoming administration about the post. He added Reyes may issue a statement about Napolitano's selection when she officially accepts the appointment offer.
As PolitickerTX.com noted earlier Thursday, many Hispanic groups are concerned that few Hispanics will receive a top-tier appointment.
Meanwhile, Texans are facing serious competition in the race for cabinet posts. Linda Chavez-Thompson has been mentioned for secretary of labor, but Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kan.) is also being talked about for the post, according to MSBNC's First Read. She could also get the nod for energy secretary, a position some have speculated might go to Houston Mayor Bill White.
Penny Pritzker has taken herself out of the running for commerce secretary, Politico reports. Former Dallas mayor Ron Kirk has also been mentioned for that post.
Some Texans continue to be mentioned as top candidates for higher-level administration appointments. Two of the most prominent include former U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm for agriculture secretary and James Steinberg for National Security Advisor.
