Hispanic Caucus recommends Noriega for secretary of veterans affairs

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is pushing state Rep. Rick Noriega (D-Houston) for secretary of veterans affairs, the Houston Chronicle reports.

With only one Latino selected for President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet so far, Hispanic leaders have become frustrated in recent weeks at the lack of Hispanic representation in the Obama administration.

To that end, U.S. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez (D-San Antonio) and U.S. Rep. Joe Baca (D-Calif.) sent a letter Tuesday to Obama's transition team, recommending Noriega and 13 other Hispanic politicians for various posts within the Cabinet.

Baca told Bloomberg News that Caucus members would "definitely be disappointed" if only one Latino was chosen for the cabinet. Bloomberg reports that Baca "warned that Obama's legislative agenda could be jeopardized if the president-elect doesn't nominate additional Hispanics."

Hispanic Democrats reportedly upset by lack of Latino candidates for Obama's Cabinet

Hispanic voters overwhelmingly supported President-elect Barack Obama in the general election, voting for him by an approximate two-to-one margin and providing him with the winning margin in two swing states, Indiana and New Mexico.

But will Obama return the favor as he picks his Cabinet?

When PolitickerTX.com reported Wednesday that the League of United Latin American Citizens had received a "very good response" over the potential appointment of San Antonio labor organizer Linda Chavez-Thompson to labor secretary, LULAC Executive Director Brent Wilkes said it was conditional on "if the pieces fit right."

"If he appoints Latinos to other positions in the Cabinet, it might be harder," Wilkes told PolitickerTX.com.

Much to the dismay of other Hispanic Democrats, Obama doesn't seem to be considering many Hispanics for those other White House or Cabinet positions. According to a report today in MSNBC's First Read, many Hispanics "are not happy with the leaks coming out of the transition and the lack of Hispanic names being floated outside of (Bill) Richardson."

LULAC director optimistic about labor secretary chances for Chavez-Thompson

The national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) told PolitickerTX.com that he's gotten a "very positive response" from the transition team of President-elect Barack Obama over the potential appointment of San Antonio labor organizer Linda Chavez-Thompson to secretary of labor.

In a letter sent to Obama last Friday and obtained by PolitickerTX.com, LULAC urged Obama "on behalf of the Hispanic community" to nominate Chavez-Thompson, a second-generation Mexican American, to the position.

The group cited her work as executive vice president of the AFL-CIO, as well as work completed for President Bill Clinton on race relations and her service as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

"We've got some very positive responses," Executive Director Brent Wilkes told PolitickerTX.com. "They think highly of her as well."

Latino civil rights group pushing Chavez-Thompson for labor secretary

San Antonio labor organizer Linda Chavez-Thompson is a candidate for secretary of labor for President-elect Barack Obama's administration, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The League of United Latin American Citizens is reportedly backing Chavez-Thompson for the position. The nonpartisan civil rights organization is considered crucial to the Latino voting block and valued highly by politicians, with Obama, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) speaking at the group's national convention in June.
